// ABOUT

5-Axis Machining Centers, explained.

A 5-Axis Machining Center is a CNC mill capable of moving a cutting tool or workpiece simultaneously across five independent axes. In addition to the standard X, Y, and Z linear axes, two rotary axes allow complex geometries to be machined in a single setup. This dramatically reduces multiple fixturing operations while improving accuracy, surface finish, and cycle time on complex components.

Five-axis machining is widely used in aerospace, medical, energy, motorsports, and mold manufacturing where intricate contours and tight tolerances are required. Buyers should evaluate trunnion versus swivel-head configurations, simultaneous versus 3+2 capability, spindle speed, control features, probing systems, and available CAM software compatibility. Although more expensive than traditional VMCs, 5-axis machines often eliminate secondary operations and reduce overall production costs.
