Vertical Turret Lathes, explained.
A Vertical Turret Lathe (VTL) is a CNC or manual turning machine that holds large, heavy workpieces on a horizontal rotating table while cutting tools approach from above and the side. Positioning the spindle vertically allows gravity to stabilize oversized components that would be difficult or impossible to secure on a conventional horizontal lathe. VTLs are commonly used to machine large rings, flanges, valves, bearings, gears, wheels, and energy-sector components.
Vertical turret lathes are favored for heavy-duty machining because they offer exceptional rigidity, large swing capacities, and excellent access to the workpiece. Buyers should evaluate table diameter, maximum turning height, ram design, live tooling options, CNC control, and machine construction. Modern CNC VTLs frequently combine turning, milling, drilling, and boring operations into a single setup, reducing handling of extremely heavy parts.
